Slavery is not just a historical notion; the commercial exploitation of human beings is still a reality today. Estimates suggest that there are approximately 45 million modern day slaves in the world. The systematic exploitation of people globally can take on many forms including labour trafficking, sex trafficking, forced marriage, debt bondage, and the exploitation of child soldiers.
The Regional Synod of Canada is committed to 1) raising awareness about slavery issues, 2) fostering advocacy efforts, and 3) equipping people to discern their calls to abolitionist activities. As slavery and human trafficking issues intersect with other areas of the Regional Synod's work or the interests of RCA churches in Canada (refugees, Indigenous peoples, youth, etc), we connect with others and collaborate to "loose the chains of injustice" (Isaiah 58:6). |
