Canoeing the Mountains book study - reflections

CHAPTER 1

1/18/2018

  1. Tod makes the statement that Christian leaders were trained for a world that is disappearing. What do you think about his description of the demise of "Christendom," and his assertion that since "the world in front of us is nothing like the world behind us," we will need to adopt new kinds of church leadership?
  2. Tod makes a clear distinction between what Leadership is, and what it is not. E.g. Leadership is not authority or management. But it is 1) Essential, 2) Expressed in Behaviours, and 3) Developed. What do you think? Where do you see yourself in those definitions?

[TEST] Sometimes I wonder whether conversations about the demise of Christendom are designed to create impetus through negativity. On the other hand, I can see that the centrality of Christianity in our culture has diminished dramatically, and of course this would have an impact on the influence of the Church and on our strategies for leadership and engagement! When I think about the demise of Christendom in terms the beginning of a New Thing (unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies...), then it makes total sense that God is always, continually, calling us to try new ways of being, acting, and leading. Especially (but not limited to) the times when we are bringing people through change.
